 COMPANY HISTORY

balcolm moe

It all started with Frank Balcom packing potatoes in Grandview, Washington in the 1920’s as F.M. Balcom Company Hay and Potatoes.

Frank’s son Maury Balcom Sr. took over the business in 1955 and partnered with Eric (Joe) Moe to become growers/packers/shippers incorporating as Balcom & Moe Inc. in Grandview, WA in 1957.

Joe’s son-in-law Otto Geisert ran the Grandview farm until 1964 when Balcom & Moe moved to Pasco, WA as water became available through the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project.

A year later they built a 12,000 sq. ft. packing facility which has expanded to 35,000 sq. ft. and still operates today in the same location.

Balcom & Moe Inc raises Fresh Market Potatoes for it’s sister company, B&B Potato, and also raises Potatoes as partner grower for processing with Lamb Weston.

The farm diversified by adding cherry and apple orchards in the late 1960’s.

The farm’s fruit division expanded in the early 70s with the addition of vinifera grapes. Maury Balcom Jr. joined the farm operations after graduating from Fresno State with a degree in viticulture and enology and planted some of the first vineyards in the state following prohibition.

Maury has since been recognized as a pioneer in the resurgence of the Washington wine industry.

Otto worked as the CEO until 1999 when his son-in-law Kevin O’Rorke became his successor.

Maury Balcom’s son, Jared Balcom took the helm in 2006. He was named the Mid-Columbia Young Agribusiness Man of the Year in 2012.

Jared currently serves as Vice President of Trade Affairs on the National Potato Council in addition to running Balcom & Moe. Learn More about Jared here.
